Most accidents involving fireworks are due to carelessness, negligence, or lack of knowledge. These incidents can be easily avoided by following some simple precautions. While fireworks bring joy through their light and sound, the pain from accidents can be severe. If you plan to use fireworks at home this year, please take a few minutes to review these safety guidelines.
Do:
- Use fireworks only outdoors.
- Purchase fireworks from authorized or reputable manufacturers.
- Light only one firework at a time, handled by one person, while others observe from a safe distance.
- Do not accept parcels if they are damaged. We strive to ensure all orders are delivered in good condition.
- Store fireworks in a safe place.
- Consider organizing a community fireworks display rather than having individuals handle them.
- Use a long candle, such as a phooljhari, to ignite fireworks, keeping your arm straight to increase the distance between your body and the fireworks.
- Keep two buckets of water nearby. In case of a fire, use the water to extinguish the flames. Remember, a major fire often starts as a small one.
- If burns occur, immediately pour a large quantity of water on the affected area.
- For severe burns, remove any smoldering clothing and wrap the person in a clean sheet. Seek immediate medical attention at a burns specialist or major hospital. Stay calm.
- For eye burns, wash the affected eye with tap water for 10 minutes and then seek medical attention at a hospital.
Not to Do:
- Never light fireworks while holding them in your hands.
- Avoid leaning over fireworks when lighting them.
- Refrain from igniting fireworks inside any kind of container.
- Stay back from fireworks that fail to go off; don’t rush in.
- Resist the urge to tamper with misfired fireworks.
- Do not try to create your own fireworks at home.
- Keep small children away from handling fireworks.
- Never throw or direct fireworks towards other people.
- Don’t carry fireworks in your pocket.
- Keep firecrackers far from burning candles and diyas.
- Avoid lighting firecrackers in narrow alleys; open areas or parks are safer.
- Skip synthetic clothing; opt for thick cotton garments instead.
- Ensure your clothing is secure and avoid wearing anything loose.
- Do not apply creams, ointments, or oils on burns.
- Drive carefully if transporting a burn victim; don’t speed, as a delay of up to an hour is often acceptable.
